    The Second Circuit Library is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented intern to assist with the processing and cataloging of our physical archival materials. This internship offers hands-on experience in archival practices within a professional library setting.

    Position Title: Summer Archives Intern Location: Thurgood Marshall U.S. Courthouse, Headquarters Library, New York, NY Salary: $20 per hour Closing Date: Open until filled Expected Start Date: May 27, 2025

    The Second Circuit Library is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented intern to assist with the processing and cataloging of our physical archival materials. This internship offers hands-on experience in archival practices within a professional library setting.

    POSITION OVERVIEW: The successful candidate will understand archives and collections, metadata standards, and best practices in library science. Tasks will include, but are not limited to:

    • Assisting in the physical processing and arrangement of archival materials.

    • Rehousing and labeling documents according to archival standards.

    • Entering data into archival management systems.

    • Identifying objects for future digitization projects.

    QUALIFICATIONS: Preference will be given to those currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from, an MLS/MLIS program, though all with relevant experience are welcome to apply. The successful candidate will possess:

    • A close attention to detail, with strong organizational skills. • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

    • An ability to work effectively under supervision and independently.

    • Experience or familiarity with cataloging and archival standards and best practices.

    • An interest in archives, special collections, or history.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident seeking U.S. citizenship. Positions with the U.S. Courts are excepted service appointments, which are “at will” and may be terminated with or without cause. All interns are subject to strict confidentiality requirements.     Digital Projects Specialist

    Position Title - Digital Projects Specialist

    Salary Range - $56,000 - $65,000

    The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research seeks a full-time digital projects specialist to join its Digital Lab. The Digital Lab ensures the long-term accessibility and preservation of YIVO library and archive materials. The Lab primarily works on digitization and post-digitization phases of archival projects, ingesting upwards of half a million digital objects into their DAMS each year. The Lab also supports digital projects across the entire organization.

    Reporting to the Digital Lab Manager, the Digital Projects Specialist works on all digitization and ingest phases of projects. This is an on-site position.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Digital capture of library and archival materials according to current digital preservation standards.
    • Perform postproduction on digital objects, including adding metadata and filenames
    • Perform quality assurance on digitized materials
    • Ingest digitized materials into DAMS system
    • Track and report digitization progress on shared Google spreadsheets
    • Keep current with trends and developments in the field of digital preservation.
    • Basic equipment maintenance and troubleshooting

    Qualifications:

    • Minimum of 2 years’ experience digitizing paper materials for preservation
    • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, including Lightroom and Photoshop.
    • Knowledge and understanding of digital image file parameters, including bit depth, color profiles, resolution, compression, image size, and formats
    • Ability to learn new technical skills in the context of digital preservation
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team
    • Demonstrated ability to meet project deadlines
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Interest in the history and culture of East European Jewry
    • Language proficiency in Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian, and/or Polish
    • Previous experience working in library or archives settings
    • Previous experience with photography and camera equipment
    • Familiarity working with archival collections as a curator or researcher

    Salary: $54,000 to $59,500, commensurate with experience

    About the Foundation

    The One Million Years Foundation is dedicated to preserving the work and philosophy of the artist On Kawara, and supports the artist’s legacy through research, publications, and exhibitions that ensure that Kawara’s art is widely and internationally accessible. The Foundation aspires to promote diversity in the visual arts by maintaining flexibility in hiring qualifications and job responsibilities, and we encourage applications from all interested candidates.

    Position Overview

    The One Million Years Foundation seeks an onsite intern to assist in archives and collections care activities, working part-time or full-time for up to three months during summer 2025. Key responsibilities will include assistance with digital asset management systems, archive digitization, and collaboration on various documentation, exhibition, publication, and research projects. Flexibility and ability to work closely with other team members are crucial in a small organization, and the intern must be prepared to take on different tasks as needed.

    Essential Responsibilities

    Assist with archival processing and digital databases: collections research, material processing, and digitizing and cataloging artwork, library, and archival materials in compliance with standardized systems.

    Assist with image rights and reproductions: preparing publication-ready images, captions, and credits; reviewing layouts, securing permissions, maintaining licensing documentation.

    Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills

    Interest in collections management and digital asset management databases, standards, and best practices, including file-naming, metadata, file formats, and workflows.

    Experience in image editing in Photoshop and/or other relevant professional software.

    Practical knowledge of archival theory, materials, and best practices; experience in collections care and art handling.

    Familiarity with 20th and 21st century art history, print publishing, media technology.

    Excellent writing and communication skills; superior attention to detail.

    Knowledge of Japanese is welcome! (But not expected.) Japanese was the artist’s first language and many archival documents are in Japanese.

    Compensation

    This is a temporary paid internship position, full-time or part-time (3 days/week minimum); compensation dependent on schedule and commensurate with experience.

    Work Environment

    Most responsibilities for this role must be performed onsite at the One Million Years Foundation office in SoHo, New York City.
