The Education Committee is dedicated to providing low-cost workshops of interest to professionals in the archival profession. Recent workshops have included: Accessing Oral Histories, Semantic Web: Linking Up Libraries and Beyond, and Using the Archivists Toolkit™ (AT)* in Archives and Special Collections.
In addition to creating its own workshops, ART’s Education Committee works with the Society of American Archivists, Metropolitan Library Council, and other organizations to bring in-demand training sessions and nationally-known instructors to the NYC area.

Fall 2010 Educational Workshops
Born-Digital AV: A Primer for Archivists and Caretakers of Moving Image and Sound Collections

Instructor: Chris Lacinak, President, AudioVisual Preservation Solutions; Adjunct Professor at NYU’s Moving Image Archiving and Preservation Masters Program.
This workshop is designed as a hands-on primer to introduce archivists and caretakers of digital file-based moving image and sound collections to utilities and processes that will help them perform routine archival tasks in the file-based domain. Activities will include: creating and validating checksums; entering, editing, reviewing, parsing and using embedded metadata; identifying file characteristics and attributes; discussion of wrappers and codecs, and discussion of obsolescence monitoring and normalization.
Upon completion of the workshop, participants will:
1. Learn how to perform routine archival tasks in the digital file-based domain.
2. Gain a basic working knowledge of digital files to enable better communication with other stakeholders in the digital object’s lifecycle.

Chris Lacinak, founder of the New York based consulting firm AudioVisual Preservation Solutions (AVPS), has spent years consulting with corporate, government, university and non-profit moving image and sound archives on a wide array of preservation and access issues. Recent clients include the Museum of Modern Art, United Nations, Library of Congress, Stanford University, HBO, and WITNESS. Mr. Lacinak has been an Adjunct Professor for New York University’s Moving Image Archiving and Preservation Masters Program since 2005. As an advocate for the advancement of the field, he also lectures, sits on advisory boards, chairs committees and is active in standards forming and relevant organizations including the Association for Moving Image Archivist (AMIA), Society for Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives (IASA), and the Audio Engineering Society (AES).

Get practical advice on identifying and cultivating individuals and organizations with the potential to provide financial support to your archival program. Learn how to plan and implement fundraising strategies, “make the ask,” and implement stewardship to keep your donors giving. Learn how to involve collection donors, volunteers, advisory boards, development officers, and your colleagues in raising money.
Upon completion of this workshop, you’ll:
- Understand the basics of fund raising;
- Be able to develop and implement a fund raising strategy for your institution;
- Have learned about other participant situations;
- Feel empowered to actively raise monies to support your programming.

SAVE THE DATE: Controlled Vocabularies & Taxonomies: How They’re Used in Digital Collections and Digital Asset Management Systems

Instructor: Donna Slawsky, Metadata & Taxonomy Consultant; Faculty instructor of the Digital Asset Management course at Columbia University.
Controlled vocabularies (CVs) which include taxonomies, are critical to ensure that digital asset management, and other asset repository users find the materials they’re seeking. CVs and taxonomies are used to enhance navigation, browsing and searching for digital collections. At this session, Donna Slawsky, a consultant in metadata and taxonomy and instructor of digital asset management at Columbia University will present an overview of controlled vocabularies, from simple lists to taxonomies and thesauri and how they are used in digital asset management systems.
Donna Slawsky has worked with corporate clients including United Media, where she constructed a taxonomy and metadata scheme for Charles Shulz’ Peanuts character art for their DAM system, and Scholastic, where she managed photos and illustrations for their DAM system. She currently consults for Time Inc. as an ontologist and taxonomist for large publication web sites including InStyle, Real Simple, Cooking Light, and Southern Living. She is an instructor at Columbia University in digital asset management for the Masters in Information and Digital Resource Management continuing education program and is on the adjunct faculty of the library at Baruch College of the City University of New York. She holds a Masters in Library and Information Science from Pratt Institute.
