A conversation with librarian and co-curator dama on the history of the PRS library, and what it means to keep a collection of 90-year-old esoteric wisdom in living dialogue with artists today.

Founded in 1934 by scholar Manly P. Hall, the Philosophical Research Society library in Los Feliz houses over 40,000 rare volumes, manuscripts, and art objects devoted to global wisdom traditions, esoteric thought, and the history of human inquiry. But from its founding, Hall envisioned a collection that could not be built from books alone; he believed art belonged in the library as its own form of wisdom.

PRS Librarian and Co-Curator dama will trace that founding vision across nearly a century of the library's history -- from Hall's original conception of a collection that held artists in mind, through PRS's ongoing artist-in-residence program, to the collaborations, exhibitions, and curatorial practices shaping the collection today.

The talk will be followed by an audience Q&A.

About

dama (Amanda Maciel Antunes) is a Brazilian, self-taught occult artist based in Los Angeles. She is a librarian and co-curator at the Philosophical Research Society, where she cares for a non-circulating research collection of over 40,000 rare volumes alongside an active program of artist collaborations and residencies. At PRS, dama founded and hosts the Surrealist Study Group, a monthly gathering devoted to women artists and writers who looked beyond the visible world for inspiration. Her own transdisciplinary practice spanning painting, writing, sound, and durational performance is rooted in memory, ritual, mythology, and the spiritual undercurrents connecting generations of women artists and mystics.

Meet the Archivists Round Table Board of Directors at the Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain on Tuesday, September 22nd. Learn from each Director about their committees and how to get more involved with A.R.T., and meet fellow archivists and A.R.T. members.

The Board will be at the Farmacy from 6:30-8:30PM, so stop by anytime you’d like in that window.

Be sure to check out the gathering and publication launch that METRO is hosting down the street at the Center for Brooklyn History on this same evening!

How to find Brooklyn Farmacy

The Brooklyn Farmacy is located between the Carroll Street and Bergen Street F/G subway stations. The B61 and B57 buses run down nearby Columbia Street and Court Street, respectively.

We’ll plan to be set up towards the back seating area inside of Brooklyn Farmacy, but if the weather is nice, we’ll go outside, too!

Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain was established in 2010 in a restored pharmacy from the 1920s. They have an extensive seasonal menu of sundaes, scoops, floats, shakes, egg creams, and more!

Event attendees are invited to visit the Green-House at Green-Wood, the cemetery’s newly opened welcome and education center. Attendees will receive a tour of the archives from Green-Wood’s archivist, Lauryn Duncan. If this is one’s first time visiting Green-Wood, you are highly recommended to walk through the cemetery before or after the tour.

Accessibility Note:

While the cemetery will not officially be part of the tour, give yourself time (and good walking shoes) to enjoy some of the most beautiful walking trails in NYC!

To visit by subway, take the R train to the 25th Street station in Brooklyn. Walk east/uphill one block. Free parking is available within Green-Wood.
