SPECIALIST II (OR SPECIALIST I ON A TRAINING BASIS) Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture/Manuscripts, Archives and Rare Books Division

The Manuscripts, Archives and Rare Books Division collects, preserves and makes available for research purposes rare, unique and primary materials which document the history and culture of peoples of African descent throughout the world, with a concentration on the Americas and the Caribbean.

Description:

  • Under the general supervision of the Curator of the Manuscripts, Archives and Rare Books Division, arranges, describes and catalogs archival collections. In collaboration with Technical Services, ensures the division remains current with evolving standards for online access to archival finding aids. Appraises collections in consultation with Curator, and determines preservation needs. Trains and supervises pages and technical assistants. Consults, as needed, with appropriate NYPL archival, conservation and cataloging staff. Works at divisional public service desk providing related reference and information services in response to in-person and telephone requests in addition to written reference assistance. Undertakes special projects as assigned. Performs related duties as required.

Qualification requirements:

  • Master’s degree in related field or ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies and successful completion of archival training. Successfully demonstrated professional experience required to be considered at the Specialist II level. Knowledge of African and/or African-American history. Demonstrated ability to apply standard archival techniques in the appraisal, arrangement and description of archival records, including the creation of finding aids. Demonstrated initiative, attention to detail, judgment and ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment. Knowledge of library computer systems, AACR2, MARC21, LC subject headings and Encoded Archival Description. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to communicate with a diverse community. Strong service orientation.
