Position Available: Public Art Fund - Archivist

PUBLIC ART FUND is New York’s leading presenter of artists’ projects, new commissions, installations and exhibitions in public spaces. Since 1977, the Public Art Fund has been committed to working with emerging and established artists to produce innovative exhibitions of contemporary art throughout New York City. By bringing artworks outside the traditional context of museums and galleries, the Public Art Fund provides a unique platform for an unparalleled public encounter with the art of our time.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Develop archival policies and procedures with a goal towards making the Archives accessible to staff and researchers.
  • Work with Press & A/V Coordinator who maintains photographic archive and Public Art Fund/project bibliography.  Ensure consistency in practice and storage.
  • Work with staff to develop record retention schedules.
  • Process the Public Art Fund’s Institutional Records by surveying, accessioning, re-housing, arranging and describing. 
  • Preserve archival materials by simple repair and proper storage methods. 
  • Prepare condition reports for items requiring conservation. 
  • Create finding aids at the collection, series, folder, and in some cases, item level.  
  • Make the Archives available through written guides and computer databases including on-line service.
  • Supervising archival projects including 2 part-time interns
  • Provide research for staff on Public Art Fund related projects including exhibitions, publications, public programming and events.

Qualifications:

  • MA with a concentration in archival studies, preferably with a background in Art History.
  • Minimum of 2 years full-time supervisory experience in an archival repository, preferably within an arts organization.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, research and administrative skills
  • General knowledge of preservation practices for various formats including paper, photographs, audio, and video.  
  • Familiarity with archival descriptive standards.
  • Knowledge of contemporary art and art-related online resources.
  • Experience with web design, website construction and scanning technology (particularly Photoshop software) a plus.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of an integrated team.

Salary:

$45,000-50,000 depending on qualifications, plus full medical and dental benefits and paid vacation. Optional 403(b) pension plan.
