General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen - Assistant Librarian
The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of the City of New
York, an educational and philanthropic organization founded in 1785, seeks a
qualified Assistant Librarian for a full-time, temporary position, to start
immediately.
The Assistant Librarian performs a wide range of library functions including
collection management, acquisitions, cataloguing, reference, and circulation.
Selects new acquisitions and places book orders. Performs copy (and limited
original) cataloguing, and supervises all technical processing. Provides library and
archival reference service to researchers. Staffs circulation desk as appropriate.
ALA-accredited MLS and at least two years of experience is required. Demonstrated
ability to assume responsibility and work independently. Experience with MS Office.
The Library's records are managed by Liberty3, from Softlink. Experience on a
comparable system is desired. Experience with BookWhere and MARCEdit a plus.
Background in archives desirable.
The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen is a 501 (c) (3) educational and
philanthropic institution founded in 1785. Its archival records have been recently
processed and are open to qualified researchers. The Library was founded in 1820 as
a library for apprentices and is the second-oldest continuously operating library
open to the public in New York City. The book collection has 120,000 volumes and
includes both historic and current material, both circulating and non-circulating.
