It’s been quite a year for the NYC Department of Records and Information Services (DORIS).  In April, amidst floods of national and even international publicity, the Department unveiled its new Online Gallery of over 800,000 digitized items from the NYC Municipal Archives, including photographs, maps, motion-pictures and audio recordings (http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/gallery/home.shtml).  The Online Gallery received so many visits upon its launch that it crashed during its first week of use, such was the level of world-wide interest in accessing the Municipal Archives’ vast trove of images from New York City’s past.  Following up the acclaim for its digital efforts, the Department held a grand opening ceremony in May to mark the completion of its brand new Visitor Center, comprised of a media and exhibitions room adjoining the recently-renovated City Hall Library.  (For a glimpse of what’s on view at the new Visitor Center, visit the DORIS YouTube Channel at http://www.youtube.com/nycdeptofrecords.)

Now that some of the much-deserved clamor has subsided, DORIS is pleased to co-sponsor this event with ART to share its laudable achievements with the NYC archives community.  The opening social in the DORIS building’s beautiful marble lobby will be followed by presentations on the collections of the Municipal Archives and the new Online Gallery, delivered by Leonora Gidlund, Director of the Municipal Archives, and Michael Lorenzini, Curator of Photography.  Presentations will be followed by informal tours of the DORIS Visitor Center and City Hall Library.  Conservator Ellen Chin will also be offering two 15-minute tours of the DORIS Conservation Lab at 7:15 and 7:45*.

No food or drink is allowed in the Visitor Center, Library, or Conservation Lab; all food/drink must be consumed in the designated social area.
