Head of the Medical Center Archives of New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center

Qualified candidates are being sought for the position of Head of the Medical Center Archives of New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center. Under the general direction of the Director of the Medical Library, this position provides leadership for the Archives in support of the research, teaching, and preservation needs of the Medical Center community. The Archives were established in 1972 and contain records dating back to 1771, the founding of the New York Hospital. The Archivist has overall responsibility for the administration and management of the institutional records of all components of the Medical Center, organizing and preserving these collections, and providing a variety of reference services to a varied constituency.

Specific administrative responsibilities include day-to-day management of the Archives, including financial and human resources, supervision of one faculty archivist, planning, budgeting, facilities management, promoting use of the collection, and representing the Archives in both internal and external venues. Specific responsibilities toward the collection include soliciting appropriate departmental additions, organizing materials for ready access and use by scholars, and preserving collections for the future, including digitization of appropriate materials to improve access. Service responsibilities include planning and providing user services appropriate to the collection, engaging in active outreach, developing both print and electronic databases, search tools, and finding aids, and providing web-based access to collections and services.

Required:

Demonstrated management, leadership, team-building, analytical, and interpersonal communication skills; either an MA in archival studies, a relevant Master’s degree with a certificate in archival management, or an ALA-accredited MLS, with emphasis on archival management; at least six years of increasingly responsible, professionally relevant experience; supervisory experience; knowledge of information technology as applied to special collections processing; proven ability to apply new technologies in information management and to work effectively with electronic information systems; familiarity with database management, word processing, spreadsheet software, and web-based applications and technologies in an archival environment; and physical ability to lift 40 lb. boxes of records are all essential.

Must have the ability to meet WCMC faculty requirements for appointment at the rank of Associate Archivist or Archivist, including a record of professional achievement, research/scholarship, and service.

Preferred:

Familiarity with finding aids using Encoded Archival Description; experience cataloging archival collections using appropriate standards, e.g., DACS, LCSH and USMARC; experience working with archival collections in non-textual formats, such as photographs, audio recordings, and video recordings; experience working with a medical collection; professional activity in archival organizations; and ACA archival certification are preferred.
