Kellen Archives – Project Archivist – Michael Kalil Collection

Position Summary:

The Kellen Archives seeks an enthusiastic, professional project archivist to process the papers and work of innovative designer Michael Kalil. The position is part time, approximately 15-20 hours per week for approximately 9 months to one year.

Reporting to the Director of the Kellen Archives at Parsons The New School for Design, the Michael Kalil Project Archivist will be responsible for managing all aspects of processing the Michael Kalil Collection. In addition, the Project Archivist will conduct oral history interviews with key associates of Michael Kalil. The archivist will be assisted by a qualified part-time student intern, most likely drawn from one of Parsons’ graduate programs.

The Michael Kalil Collection includes drawings and plans, project files, biographical files, business records, clippings, publications, ephemera and artifacts, sketchbooks, notebooks, correspondence, teaching materials, exhibition materials, photographs, and slides.

Responsibilities:

  • Processing the collection in accordance with national professional archival standards.
  • Describing the collection in Archivists’ Toolkit, creating a finding aid in accordance with DACS and other archival standards. Includes searching, authority work, description, subject analysis.
  • Scheduling and conducting oral history interviews with key Kalil associates in compliance with accepted best practices; and conducting quality control on transcripts of the interviews.
  • Supervising intern, who will provide assistance with processing and research tasks.
  • Work hours: Weekdays, exact hours to be agreed upon between Project Archivist and Kellen director.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Archival Management, or Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution with a focus in archival and special collections studies.
  • 1-2 years successful experience as a processing archivist, with experience writing finding aids.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of arrangement and description of archival collections; understanding of the uses of DACS, EAD, Dublin Core, and current archival best practices and standards
  • Familiarity with and/or avid interest in 20th century architectural and interior design history.
  • Familiarity with the preservation and conservation needs of design materials.
  • Superior written and oral communication.
  • Ability to work independently, with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational, time and project management skills.
  • Experience with digital preservation, metadata and access tools and methodologies.
  • Proficiency working in Archivists’ Toolkit and/or other archival collection management systems.
  • Ability, and willingness, to routinely lift heavy archival containers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with 20th century architectural and/or design drawings.
  • Experience with the preservation and conservation needs of design materials.
  • Knowledge of 20th century architectural, environmental and interior design history.
